Beyond Pay-cheque

If you're currently unemployed, it's natural to feel discouraged, anxious, and like you've lost your sense of purpose. Our jobs are so core to how we see ourselves and how society values us. Without that paycheck and title, it's easy to start questioning your self-worth.

But I'm here to tell you - you are not worthless. You are so much more than your job or employment status.

Behind the scenes, you may be dealing with extraordinarily difficult personal challenges that no one else can see. Perhaps you're grieving a loss, struggling with your mental health, facing immigrant/visa issues, or caring for an ill loved one. Any one of those situations would make holding down a job incredibly difficult.

The stress of being unemployed itself is also so overwhelming. The constant strain of scouring listings, tailoring resumes, reaching out to your network, and dealing with rejected applications is emotionally and mentally taxing. It can paralyze you and make you question everything about yourself.

If you're in that place of pain and self-doubt, please be kind to yourself. You're doing the best you can. Unemployment is temporary - it's not a reflection of your true talents, skills, and value as a human being.

I encourage you to practice self-care during this time through meditation, journaling, spending time in nature, or whatever calms your body and soul. Don't let unemployment dominate your entire sense of self. Remember all the other roles you play - child, partner, friend, creator, volunteer, hobbyist. Those all matter so much.

Hold onto hope that soon, you'll find not just a job, but a role that allows you to grow and shine in a way you haven't before. In the meantime, know that you are strong, resilient, and have a profound worth that no job could ever provide. You've got this.
